Grid parity is the point at which an alternative energy source can generate electricity at a levelized cost equal to or below the price of power bought from the grid, without subsidy. Germany reached grid parity for utility-scale solar photovoltaics in 2011 and for rooftop solar PV in 2012, and wind power reached grid parity in parts of Europe by the mid-2000s. By early 2014 unsubsidized solar PV had reached grid parity in at least nineteen countries.
