Getting the same useful work from less energy through the technical performance of the converting device: a lamp, motor or furnace that wastes less of what it draws. It is distinct from conservation, which changes behaviour rather than equipment, and it is often called the cheapest energy resource because the kilowatthour never consumed needs no plant to generate it.
