A large-scale shift in the sources that power a society: wood to coal, coal to oil and gas, and today fossil fuels to low-carbon electricity, renewables and nuclear, driven by climate policy as much as economics. Historians such as Vaclav Smil stress that past transitions took generations, which frames the central debate about the present one: whether policy and falling technology costs can compress a process that has never before been fast.
