Alkaline Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Electrochemical Converter

An alkaline anion-exchange membrane fuel cell, or AAEMFC, is a type of alkaline fuel cell that uses a solid anion-exchange membrane to separate its anode and cathode compartments rather than the liquid electrolyte the original alkaline fuel cell design used. Alkaline fuel cells generate current by transporting alkaline anions, usually hydroxide, between the electrodes, and the earliest designs did this with aqueous potassium hydroxide as the electrolyte. The AAEMFC replaces that liquid electrolyte with a polymer membrane that carries the hydroxide anions instead, and the same device is also known by several other names in the literature, including anion-exchange membrane fuel cell, alkaline membrane fuel cell, hydroxide-exchange membrane fuel cell and solid alkaline fuel cell.
