The lightest element, used in energy systems as a carrier rather than a primary source: it must first be made, today mostly from natural gas and increasingly by electrolysis of water using renewable electricity. Hydrogen burns and reacts in fuel cells without carbon emissions at the point of use, which put it at the center of plans to decarbonize steelmaking, fertilizer, shipping and long-term energy storage.

Marks the Toyota Mirai, launched in Japan in December 2014, the first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell vehicle sold commercially. Hydrogen fuel cells had earlier non-commercial and niche industrial/aerospace uses (for example NASA spacecraft), but this is the first commercial sale of hydrogen as an energy source to ordinary buyers.
