Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project is Ethiopia's flagship hydropower initiative on the Blue Nile, launched in 2011 and funded largely through domestic bonds and public contributions as a statement of national self-reliance. The dam has been a persistent source of diplomatic tension with downstream Egypt and Sudan, which depend heavily on the Nile for freshwater and have contested the pace of reservoir filling and the absence of a binding operating agreement. Ethiopia has framed the project as central to its ambition to become a major regional electricity exporter as well as to meet its own domestic power needs.
