The Jiuquan Wind Power Base Project, often referred to as the Gansu wind farm, was the first of several large wind power bases designated under China's national renewable energy planning, intended to concentrate onshore wind development in resource-rich western provinces for transmission to demand centers in the east. Construction began in 2009 across a series of connected wind farm sites in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province, with capacity added in successive stages through the following decade. The project's scale strained local transmission capacity in its early years, leading to significant curtailment of generated wind power until new ultra-high-voltage transmission lines were built to move electricity to eastern China.
