The Vogtle Units 3 and 4 Construction Project added two new AP1000 reactors to Georgia Power's existing Vogtle nuclear station, the first new nuclear reactors built from scratch in the United States in more than three decades. Construction began in 2009 and was repeatedly delayed and its budget more than doubled from an original estimate of about 14 billion dollars, a saga that included the 2017 bankruptcy of lead contractor Westinghouse. Unit 3 finally reached commercial operation in 2023 and Unit 4 in 2024, and the project's cost overruns became a widely cited case study in the difficulty of building large nuclear projects on schedule and on budget in Western countries.
