The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant Project is the United Arab Emirates' national civil nuclear program, developed by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation with South Korea's KEPCO as prime contractor under a landmark 2009 agreement. Construction of the first of four APR-1400 reactor units began in 2012, and the plant became the first commercial nuclear power station in the Arab world when its first unit entered commercial operation in 2021, with the remaining three units following in stages. The project was pursued as a way for the UAE to diversify its electricity supply and reduce the share of natural gas used for domestic power generation, freeing more gas for export.
