The largest pumped storage power station in the world for most of its life, in the Allegheny Mountains of Virginia, operating since 1985 with about 3,000 megawatts of capacity. Water cycled between its upper and lower reservoirs makes it in effect an enormous battery, and it earned the nickname of the largest battery in the world decades before lithium cells reached the grid.
