The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is an independent US federal agency that regulates the interstate transmission and wholesale sale of electricity and natural gas, and the interstate transport of petroleum by pipeline. It also licenses non-federal hydropower projects and reviews interstate natural gas pipelines, storage projects and liquefied natural gas terminals. Congress created FERC in 1977 under the Department of Energy Organization Act, renaming the earlier Federal Power Commission (established in 1920) while preserving its independent status within the new Department of Energy. FERC is headed by up to five commissioners appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, with no more than three commissioners from one political party serving at any time.
