Distribution Transformer

Grid Equipment

A distribution transformer performs the final voltage step-down on an electricity grid, taking power from a medium voltage distribution line and reducing it to the low voltage supplied to homes and businesses. They are typically mounted on utility poles, placed on concrete pads, or installed in underground vaults close to the customers they serve, and are sized much smaller than the large transformers used at power stations or transmission substations. Because there are far more distribution transformers than any other kind of transformer on a grid, their efficiency and reliability have a large cumulative effect on overall system losses.
