Parsons Invents the Steam Turbine

The Electric Age Begins

In 1884, as junior partner at Clarke, Chapman and Company of Gateshead-on-Tyne, Charles Parsons produced the first practical steam turbine coupled to a dynamo, his first patents dated 23 April 1884. The turbo-generator scaled as reciprocating engines could not, and it became, and remains, the machine behind most of the world's electricity, spinning in coal, nuclear and combined-cycle stations alike.
