The Department of Energy nuclear research complex in the high desert of eastern Idaho, established in 1949 as the National Reactor Testing Station. More than fifty reactors have been built on its 890 square mile site, among them the ones that gave the world its first usable electricity from nuclear power and the power plant of the first nuclear submarine, and much of what is known about reactor behavior was learned there.
