The not-for-profit international regulatory authority for the reliability and security of the North American grid, writing the standards power system operators must meet and monitoring compliance. It descends from the National Electric Reliability Council, the voluntary body the industry formed in 1968 in the wake of the great blackout era, and took its present corporate form on 28 March 2006.
