Alexander M. Gorlov was a Russian mechanical engineer, born on 23 March 1931 and died on 10 June 2016, who became Professor Emeritus and Director of the Hydro-Pneumatic Power Laboratory at Northeastern University in Boston. He earned a doctorate in engineering and built a scientific career in Moscow during the Khrushchev Thaw, then emigrated to the United States in 1975 after his friendship with Alexander Solzhenitsyn forced him to break with his Soviet life. From 1976 he taught mechanical engineering at Northeastern while researching renewable energy from water flows and wind, and he developed helical turbines for rivers, tides and open ocean currents, work that led to a series of patents for the Gorlov Helical Turbine.
