Anthony George Maldon Michell was an English-born Australian engineer, born in London on 21 June 1870 and died at Camberwell, Victoria, on 17 February 1959. By his early thirties he had already created three new inventions, a regenerative pump, a cross-flow turbine and a water meter. His major and highly successful invention was the Michell thrust bearing, a tilting-pad device that made possible much of the modern development of steam and water turbines and of propeller drives for large fast ships. In the energy field he is remembered as the originator of the cross-flow water turbine that Donat Banki and Fritz Ossberger later improved and brought to market.
