Carl von Linde was a German engineer whose 1876 ammonia refrigeration machine and 1895 practical process for liquefying air made industrial-scale cooling and gas separation possible for the first time. The company he founded in Munich, originally Gesellschaft fur Linde's Eismaschinen and known today as Linde AG, became one of the world's leading industrial gas producers, and the liquefaction techniques he developed underpin the modern production, storage and transport of liquefied natural gas and other cryogenic energy carriers.
