Christopher Hinton, Baron Hinton of Bankside

Christopher Hinton was a British engineer who built and ran the industrial organization that constructed Britain's first plutonium production and nuclear power facilities. As Member for Engineering and Production on the UK Atomic Energy Authority from 1954, he directed the Industrial Group at Risley, which built the Windscale, Capenhurst and Springfields nuclear sites, and he personally supervised construction of Calder Hall, connected to the National Grid on 27 August 1956 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II that October as the world's first nuclear power station to supply electricity to the public grid on a commercial scale. Hinton later chaired the Central Electricity Generating Board until 1964 and was made a life peer, Baron Hinton of Bankside, in 1965.
