Clint Williams Murchison Sr. was an American oil and natural gas entrepreneur who built one of the largest independent petroleum fortunes in Texas. Born in Tyler, Texas in 1895, he entered the oil business in 1919 as a lease trader in the Burkburnett oilfield alongside his lifelong business partner Sid Richardson, selling his early holdings in 1925 for five million dollars. In 1929 he founded the Southern Union Gas Company, which supplied natural gas across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and New Mexico, and by 1930 he was a major developer in the East Texas oil field. In 1945 he formed the Delhi Oil Corporation, which grew into one of the country's largest independent oil companies. Murchison later diversified into railroads, insurance and other industries, and died in 1969 with a fortune estimated at 500 million dollars.
