Donat Banki, born Donat Lőwinger, was a Hungarian mechanical engineer and inventor of Jewish heritage, born on 6 June 1859 and died on 1 August 1922. In 1893 he invented the carburetor for the stationary engine together with Janos Csonka, known as the Banki-Csonka engine. He is also given partial credit for the invention of the cross-flow turbine, the water turbine that grew out of his improvements to the earlier design of the Australian engineer Anthony Michell and was later refined and manufactured by Fritz Ossberger, so that the machine is still often called the Banki turbine in engineering literature.
