Elwood Mead was an American engineer and administrator who, as Commissioner of the United States Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 to 1936, oversaw the construction of the Hoover Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric power projects built up to that time. Mead had built his early career on water law and irrigation policy in Wyoming before he was appointed to lead the Bureau of Reclamation's dam-building program, and the reservoir created behind the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, was named in his honor in 1936.
