Francis S. Peabody

Francis Stuyvesant Peabody (1859 to 1922) was an American businessman born in Chicago, Illinois. In 1883, at age 24, he founded a small coal retail firm, Peabody, Daniels and Company, buying and reselling fuel to consumers. After buying out his partner in 1889 he incorporated the business in Illinois in 1890 as the Peabody Coal Company. Under his leadership the company grew into one of the largest coal enterprises in the United States by 1920, and it later became Peabody Energy, described as the largest private sector coal company in the world. Peabody died in 1922, at age 63, following a heart attack suffered during a fox hunt on his estate, having accumulated a personal fortune estimated at 35 million dollars along with roughly 75 million dollars in business assets.
