Fredrik Ljungström was a Swedish engineer, technical designer and industrialist, born on 16 June 1875 and died on 18 February 1964, and is considered one of the foremost inventors of Sweden. He accounted for hundreds of technical patents alone and with his brother Birger Ljungström, covering subjects from bicycle freewheel hubs and automatic transmissions to steam turbines, air preheaters and circular arc sailboat hulls. He co-founded the Ljungström Steam Turbine company and the Ljungström Swedish Turbine Manufacturing Company, and during the resource scarcity of the Second World War his Ljungström method for underground gasification of oil shale by electrical energy had a strategic impact for Sweden.
