American oil wildcatter, born in 1907 in Beaumont, Texas, and died in 1988 in Houston. Known as Diamond Glenn and as the King of the Wildcatters, McCarthy built his fortune through aggressive, high risk exploration drilling, striking oil 38 times between 1931 and 1942. During the 1940s he established eleven separate oilfields and expanded several others he had found earlier, becoming one of the most prolific independent oil finders in Texas at a time when wildcat drilling was transforming the state into a major oil producing region. His rags to riches career as an independent driller, financed outside the major oil companies, later inspired the character Jett Rink in Edna Ferber's novel Giant.
