Henry Huttleston Rogers was an American industrialist and financier who rose to become one of the dominant figures at Standard Oil. By 1890 he was a vice president of the company and chairman of its operating committee, and through the 1890s he took an increasingly central role as John D. Rockefeller stepped back from daily management. Rogers pioneered the long distance pipeline transport of oil and natural gas as an alternative to shipping by rail, helping establish the National Transit Company in 1881 to own and operate Standard Oil's pipeline network. His final major undertaking was building the six hundred mile Virginian Railway from the coal fields of West Virginia to port facilities near Norfolk, Virginia, completed in 1909 shortly before his death.
