James M. Guffey was an American oilman whose financing made possible the 1901 Spindletop gusher that touched off the Texas oil boom. Guffey held a five-eighths interest in the well he backed alongside partner John Galey and driller Anthony Lucas, and when it blew in near Beaumont, Texas on January 10, 1901, it proved to be one of the largest oil discoveries yet made in the United States. Guffey formed the J. M. Guffey Petroleum Company that May to take over the field, and in 1907 that company merged with others to create the Gulf Oil Corporation, from which Guffey sold his stake for three million dollars.
