John Cadman, 1st Baron Cadman

John Cadman, 1st Baron Cadman, was a British mining engineer, petroleum technologist and public servant who became one of the most influential figures in the early twentieth century oil industry. He first gained prominence developing Trinidad's oil reserves in 1907 while serving as the colony's Inspector of Mines, and he went on to pioneer the teaching of petroleum engineering at the University of Birmingham. During the First World War he directed Britain's Petroleum Executive, coordinating the country's wartime oil supply. Cadman later headed the Anglo-Persian Oil Company from 1927 to 1936 and its successor, the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, from 1936 until his death in 1941, expanding the company's production roughly fourfold and working with the leadership of Royal Dutch Shell to help stabilize global petroleum prices.
