John D. Archbold

John Dustin Archbold was an American oil industry executive who effectively ran the Standard Oil Company in its final decades. Born in Leesburg, Ohio in 1848, he became one of the United States' earliest independent oil refiners before his company was absorbed into John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil combination. Archbold rose quickly within the organization, becoming Rockefeller's closest associate and Standard Oil's chief spokesman by 1882, and after Rockefeller turned his attention to philanthropy in 1896, Archbold ran the company's operations as vice president. When the United States Supreme Court ordered Standard Oil dissolved in 1911, Archbold became president of its largest successor, Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, a post he held until his death in 1916. His tenure emphasized standardizing refining and distribution to reduce waste across the oil industry.
