Joseph N. Pew was an American businessman who founded the Sun Oil Company, later Sunoco, in 1880 after investing in Pennsylvania's oil fields and working with business partners on natural gas pipeline operations. Under his leadership the company grew from those regional beginnings into a major petroleum producer and refiner, and after his death in 1912 his sons carried the business forward while also directing much of the family's wealth into philanthropy, eventually establishing The Pew Charitable Trusts. Pew also served as chairman of the board of trustees of Grove City College.
