Ludvig Nobel

Ludvig Nobel (1831 to 1888) was a Swedish-Russian engineer and businessman credited with creating the Russian oil industry. With his brother Robert he ran Branobel, an oil company based in Baku that at one point produced half of the world oil output. Nobel invented the modern oil tanker, designing the Zoroaster, considered the first successful oil tanker in the world, which made its first voyage from Baku to Astrakhan in 1878, and he improved refinery technology. He built the largest fortune of any of the Nobel brothers and was one of the richest men in the world during his lifetime, though the Russian assets of the family were later confiscated after the Bolshevik Revolution. He was the elder brother of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize, and son of Immanuel Nobel, himself an engineering pioneer.
