Lyman Stewart

Lyman Stewart was an American oilman who co-founded the Union Oil Company of California in 1890, later known as Unocal, one of the major oil companies to emerge from the state's early petroleum boom. Stewart had begun drilling for oil in Pennsylvania in the 1860s before moving west, and under his leadership as company president Union Oil grew from a small California operation into a major producer and refiner, building out pipelines, tankers and refining capacity along the Pacific coast. The company he founded remained an independent major oil producer for over a century before merging into Chevron in 2005.
