Oil & Petroleum Pioneers

Nubar Sarkis Gulbenkian, born in the Ottoman Empire on 2 June 1896 and died 10 January 1972, was an Armenian-British oil businessman and socialite, the son of the oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian. He began his career as a protege of Henri Deterding at Royal Dutch Shell before building his own independent fortune through oil dealings, which he combined with a large inheritance from his father to fund an extravagant lifestyle. During the Second World War he was also involved in helping Allied escapees through the Pat O'Leary escape line.
