Oil & Petroleum Pioneers

Pierre Wack, 1922 to 1997, was a French oil executive who, working out of Royal Dutch Shell's London office in the 1970s, pioneered the use of scenario planning as a tool for anticipating major shifts in the oil market, including that decade's oil shocks. He later brought the technique into wider business use through Harvard Business Review articles published in 1985, and after leaving Shell he consulted for the mining companies De Beers and Anglo American in South Africa. A 2017 biography by Thomas J. Chermack documents his career and the development of scenario planning.
