Ralph Miller was an American engineer who patented the thermodynamic cycle now known by his name, United States patent 2,817,322, dated 24 December 1957. The Miller cycle is used in a type of internal combustion engine that may be two or four stroke and may run on diesel fuel, gases or dual fuel, and it uses a supercharger or a turbocharger to offset the performance loss of the Atkinson cycle. The engine type was first used in ships and stationary power generating plants and is now used in some railway locomotives, and it was adapted by Mazda for a V6 engine used in its Millenia sedan.
