Robert O. Anderson

Robert Orville Anderson, April 12, 1917 to December 2, 2007, was an American businessman who founded Atlantic Richfield Company, known as ARCO, and built it into the sixth-largest oil company in the United States by the time he left in 1986. Anderson approved the exploration that led to the discovery of the Prudhoe Bay oil field in Alaska, still the largest oil field yet found in North America. He merged his own company, Hondo, with Atlantic Refining in 1963 and then with Richfield Oil in 1966 to form ARCO, and by the time he left, ARCO's revenues had grown twentyfold since 1966.
