Sid W. Richardson was an American oilman whose wildcatting career made him one of the wealthiest independent oil producers in Texas. Born in Athens, Texas in 1891, he entered the oil business around 1919 in partnership with fellow Texan Clint Murchison, and after early financial setbacks built a fortune through independent oil and gas leases and production centered on Fort Worth. He led several oil related companies, including Sid Richardson Gasoline Company and Sid Richardson Carbon Company, and later expanded into ranching. Richardson's oil fortune funded the Sid W. Richardson Foundation, established in 1947, and supported his extensive collection of American Western art. He died in 1959.
