Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, born in 1973, is an Emirati government minister and energy executive who has led the United Arab Emirates state oil company alongside the country's flagship renewable energy company. He rose from an engineering role at the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to become chief executive of Masdar, the UAE's renewable energy company, from 2006 to 2014, before returning to ADNOC in 2016 as its chief executive and managing director, a post he still holds. He has also served as the UAE's Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology since 2020 and as the UAE's Special Envoy for Climate Change. In 2023 he presided over the COP28 United Nations climate conference in Dubai, an appointment that drew criticism from environmental groups because ADNOC expanded its oil and gas production under his leadership at a time when the industry faced pressure to cut output.
