Ernst Waldemar Jungner was a Swedish inventor and engineer, born on 19 June 1869 in Västra Götaland County and died on 30 August 1924. In 1898 he invented the nickel-iron electric storage battery, the nickel-cadmium battery and the rechargeable alkaline silver-cadmium battery. He studied at Uppsala University and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and in 1900 he started the firm Ackumulator Aktiebolaget Jungner. A long patent dispute with Thomas Edison ended in Edison winning because he had larger financial resources, which caused serious problems for Jungner and his firm.
