Weetman Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray, was a British civil engineer and industrialist who built his family firm S. Pearson and Son into one of the world's leading construction and engineering contractors before turning to the oil business in Mexico. In 1908 he founded the Compania Mexicana de Petroleo El Aguila, known in English as Mexican Eagle Petroleum, and its Potrero del Llano No. 4 well, completed in December 1910, became one of the era's most publicised gushers, yielding more than 100 million barrels over its producing life. Pearson built Mexican Eagle into an integrated oil enterprise spanning concessions, wells, pipelines, storage, refining and tanker shipping, before transferring managerial control to Royal Dutch Shell in March 1919 for 7.7 million pounds.
