William Knox D'Arcy was a British businessman who became one of the principal founders of the oil and petrochemical industry in Persia. In 1901 he obtained the D'Arcy Concession, an agreement that allowed him to explore for, extract and market oil, natural gas, asphalt and ozokerite across much of Persia. D'Arcy used the concession to found the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1909, the enterprise that would later become BP. His Persian oil venture opened the Middle East oil reserves to large scale Western development.
