A family of technologies that capture carbon dioxide from large point sources such as coal-fired power plants and industry, compress it, and inject it for permanent storage in geologic formations including depleted oil and gas reservoirs, unmineable coal seams and deep saline reservoirs. Adding utilization, putting some captured carbon dioxide to commercial use, gives the approach its longer name of CCUS; it is the principal route by which fossil fuel plants could keep operating in a constrained-carbon world.
