George Paget Thomson

Nuclear Pioneers

Sir George Paget Thomson was a British experimental physicist, born on 3 May 1892 and died on 10 September 1975, who shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physics with Clinton Davisson for the experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals. He was the son of J. J. Thomson, who won the Nobel Prize in 1906, and it has been said that the elder Thomson won for showing the electron is a particle and the younger for showing it is a wave. With Moses Blackman of Imperial College London he designed the toroidal solenoid in 1946, an early fusion power device that was the first such design to be patented.
