A quantum dot solar cell, or QDSC, is a solar cell design that uses quantum dots as its light-absorbing photovoltaic material, in place of bulk materials such as silicon, copper indium gallium selenide or cadmium telluride. Quantum dots have a bandgap that can be tuned across a wide range of energy levels simply by changing their size, unlike a bulk material, whose bandgap is fixed by the choice of material. This tunability makes quantum dots attractive for multi-junction solar cells, in which a variety of materials are combined to improve efficiency by harvesting different portions of the light striking the cell.
