The Sagebien wheel is a type of water wheel invented by the French hydrological engineer Alphonse Sagebien, a graduate of the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures. It is a breastshot water wheel design, meaning the water strikes the wheel partway up its side rather than at the top or bottom, and it was among the most efficient breastshot designs of its era: working on a low head of water, real-world Sagebien wheels reached efficiencies of up to 90 percent.
