Wind Pump

Wind Conversion

A wind pump, also called a drainage mill, is a wind-driven device used to move water from one place to another. The technology originated in Central Asia during the medieval period and later became especially common in the Netherlands and England, where wind pumps were central to land drainage and to irrigation for centuries. Unlike a windmill built to grind grain or a modern wind turbine built to generate electricity, a wind pump converts wind energy directly into the mechanical work of lifting or moving water, and versions of the design remain in use today for rural water supply and drainage.
