The Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project, known as TANAP, was built to carry natural gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz II field across the length of Turkey as the central link in the European Union-backed Southern Gas Corridor, intended to diversify Europe's gas supply away from reliance on Russia. Construction ran from 2015 to 2018, led by Azerbaijan's SOCAR alongside Turkish and international energy company partners, and the pipeline connects at its western end to the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline carrying gas onward into southern Europe. The project was a major element of Azerbaijan's strategy to become a significant gas exporter to European markets.
