The Trans-Adriatic Pipeline Project forms the western segment of the Southern Gas Corridor, carrying Azerbaijani natural gas onward from the Trans-Anatolian pipeline's terminus at the Greek-Turkish border across Greece and Albania and under the Adriatic Sea to southern Italy. Built between 2016 and 2020 by a consortium including BP, SOCAR and Snam, the pipeline gave several southeastern European countries their first significant access to a non-Russian gas source through connected interconnectors. Its completion finished the roughly 3,500-kilometer Southern Gas Corridor chain running from the Caspian Sea to Italy, a project pursued for more than a decade as a strategic diversification effort for European gas supply.
