Shale Gas

Fossil Fuel

Natural gas held in fine-grained shale rock, produced at commercial scale only once horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing were combined. Large-scale production began around 2000 in the Barnett Shale of North Central Texas, and the United States Energy Information Administration projects shale and tight resources to remain the largest source of American natural gas production through 2050.
