The first tidal power station in the world built at commercial scale, a barrage across the Rance estuary in Brittany, France, generating since 1966 with 240 megawatts of capacity. It remained the largest tidal plant on Earth for forty-five years and still operates, a working demonstration that the tides can be harnessed and of how rarely the geography that allows it occurs.
